The store welcomed back customers from 7am this morning.

Store manager Lewis King said: “It’s amazing, the feedback from customers has been beyond this world.”

He said it was ‘a relief’ to reopen after spending 373 days in the temporary store amid the pandemic, which he said had been ‘chaotic’.

The renovation and expansion of the store comes after eight years of planning and organisation.

HB projects, Co-op’s main contractor, headed up the job, which involved careful work to preserve the heritage of the store – as some of its walls have been standing for over 400 years.

Work was temporarily stopped for a period of time last year due to the pandemic.

The newly reopened store includes an extended chilled and Ambient range, a cash machine, Costa coffee and new refrigeration, while also bringing back old favourites like the Instore Bakery and National Lottery.
