Sainsbury's announces new supermarket in Midhurst
A national supermarket has confirmed it will be moving into Midhurst, news which has been hailed as 'fantastic' and has already drawn positive reaction from residents.
Moving into the current Budgens site in Bepton Road, Sainbury’s will be keeping the current staff on and will include an Argos collection site.
Town councillor Gordon McAra called it ‘brilliant news’ and said: “For years people in Midhurst have been calling for a national supermarket and we have had our hopes dashed a few times. What it brings is a wider range of goods and a more organised sales set up.”
He added that retaining the staff was a major benefit as well as keeping residents shopping in Midhurst.
“People were driving all the way into Chichester. It keeps people local so they will stay to to their bigger shop in Midhurst — I think it is really good news for the town.”
Fellow town councillor Jeanette Sutton said residents’ responses have been ‘very positive’ but added: “I just hope it doesn’t impact the independents that have been so great during the pandemic.
“I think it is fantastic. Everything will be in Midhurst. Hopefully people will think ‘we’ve got everything here’”.
Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s property director, said: “We’re really excited to open another Neighbourhood Hub store.
“This new addition to our store estate will provide local customers with an excellent range of food and convenience products. We plan to open the doors to our refurbished store in
November and will continue to keep the community updated on our plans. We look forward to meeting our new Midhurst customers very soon.”
The new store will include an Argos collection point a pizza counter and a selection of beauty products, as well as fresh juice and coffee to go.
As the new Sainsbury’s store will be replacing the existing Budgens, there will be a temporary closure of approximately 12-weeks from the beginning of September whilst the building is refurbished and made ready to open as a new Sainsbury’s Neighbourhood Hub in November.
Sainsbury’s has said the team in Midhurst will play an active role in the local community by supporting a local charity, as well as supporting Sainsbury’s nationwide community programmes and charity partners.
