The Government ordered all non-essential retailers, such as clothes shops, to shut on March 23 as the UK went under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Restrictions were eased last Monday (June 15), meaning traders could reopen for business under strict social distancing measures.

Shoppers ventured into Hastings town centre on the first day, with queues forming outside some stores, such as Primark in Priory Meadow.

Andy Harvey, manager of Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, said: “Last week went well with the visitors to Priory Meadow adapting to the ‘new normal’ very quickly. Our retailers were excited about welcoming back their customers and trade was very encouraging.”

John Bownas, manager of Love Hastings Ltd, said: “As with everywhere else last week wasn’t as busy as the same time last year - although it was obviously up on the last few weeks as most of our retailers are now open for business.

“It’s been good to see the council shifting their messaging to tell people the town is getting ready for welcoming more people once the pubs, cafes, and restaurants are also allowed to reopen.

“Everyone has been saying for some years that retail-dominated high streets are being replaced with a focus on leisure and hospitality, and I think the next couple of weeks will prove this theory, as we hope to see more people back in the shops once there is also a chance to sit and relax with a coffee in a cafe or a cold pint in a pub.

“Our big continued message is that buying local is the best way we can protect local jobs. You don’t have to spend any more than you would otherwise - just spend it in a local shop rather than online.”
