Pevensey Bay Holiday Park, which is one of 30 Park Holidays UK branches in southern England, opened its doors to the key workers recently and the company said they are able to help a ‘small number’ of staff in these ‘exceptional circumstances’.

A Park Holiday UK spokesperson said, “Coghurst Hall Holiday Park in Hastings and Pevensey Bay Holiday Park have been able to support a small number of frontline NHS staff with accommodation in exceptional circumstances.

“Many of the initiatives to help local key workers have come from our park staff and their wish to reach out to others in the nearby community, knowing that their actions would be supported by the company.

“For example, at Pevensey Bay Holiday Park a member of the staff team heard about a paramedic who was sleeping in his motorhome on the side of the road near the park, so we offered him the use of a much more comfortable holiday home.

“We will continue to support such individual acts of good neighbourliness by staff, but are also now in talks to formalise the way in which our group can help NHS health boards.

“We are also in discussion with other authorities to identify where we can be of further help in providing holiday caravans and holiday lodges which enable key personnel to stay close to where they are most needed.”

The spokesperson said that this time of year would normally be ‘buzzing’ and the company is doing ‘everything’ to ensure they are able to re-open in the future.

The spokesperson said, “We are doing everything to ensure that when we do re-open, our parks will quickly return to the happy and cheerful environments which our customers remember. This is important not just for customers and for us as a company, but also for the local economies in the areas where we operate.

“Spending by park guests supports many other local businesses and helps to sustain the jobs which they provide – so everyone’s best interests will now be served by following government guidelines on movement, and hoping that the return of the great British seaside holiday will be back with us sooner rather than later.”

A message from the Editor, Gary Shipton:

Thank you for reading this story on our website.

But I also have an urgent plea to make of you.

In order for us to continue to provide high quality local news on this free-to-read site and in print, please purchase a copy of our newspaper as well. With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on our town centres and many of our valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you buying a copy.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: “Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role.”

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
