Plans for new bar in Selsey approved

An application to replace an Indian restaurant with a bar in Selsey has been given the green light.

In a bid to 'encourage people to visit south of the town', Selsey restaurateur Beyhan Cumali proposed the conversion of New Asian Spice, in 3 Hillfield Road, into a bar to offer a 'different dining and drinking experience' in Selsey. Read more hereCurrently, the site is used as an Indian restaurant and bar with a takeaway service.

The design and access statement for the change of use application read: "The benefit of these changes is to provide a new facility with a different dining and drinking experience to Selsey, to encourage people to visit south of the town, hoping to invigorate growth to local businesses in this area."

The application received 13 letters/comments of support, whilst Selsey Town Council also backed the proposals. However, five people objected on the planning portal.

Supporting the plans, Jenny Graves wrote: "I believe this will be a positive change. It is important that our high street survives and that businesses are allowed leeway to develop and allow the best chance of success.

"This is not a good time for businesses to be hindered, we need to help them as much as possible."

Kylee Scott agreed. She said: "This is a fantastic idea to add to the diversity of Selsey life. This proposal brings opportunity for employment too.

"When you live by the sea you really do want to feel away from it all. To enjoy a drink or two with friends and light bites. It can only be a good thing."

However, resident Andrew Treacher didn't sound too enthused by the idea.

He wrote: "Anyone that is actually going to be affected by it is firmly against any garden or outside structure being built because of its accompanying associated commercial pub garden like noise on our very doorsteps."

Fellow resident Susan Frost shared a similar concern. She said: "I want to know what kind of structure will be in the garden as any noise generated from such structure will impact greatly on my enjoyment of my garden plus my loss of privacy."
