Christ's Hospital hosts surgery taster session

Pupils who are members of Christ's Hospital's medical society, along with students from neighbouring schools, attended a surgical skills workshop at the school.

The session, held on Tuesday February 6, was run by Dr Judy Evans, the first female plastic surgeon in the UK and a former pupil of the school.

Dr Evans was accompanied by four doctors, two of whom are also former pupils, and included distinguished cardiac and plastic surgeons.

As well as exploring the different routes into medicine, the group of 45 students, including pupils from Lancing College and Ardingly College, had a go at the practical side of surgery. The workshop involved learning basic suturing techniques and practising the fine motor skills required for endoscopic keyhole surgery before finishing with a question and answer session with Dr Evans and her team. The medical society was set up three years ago and is run by science teacher, Nathalie Dotor Cespedes. Its goal is to focus the minds of young people who aspire to explore medicine as a career.

The society meets weekly with the most of its members studying science and maths A level. A number of events are organised for its members from curriculum enrichment to tackling personal statements, interview preparation and discussion forums on current topics and ethics. Nathalie Dotor Cespedes added: “I would like to thank Dr Evans and her team for finding time in their busy schedules to run this valuable workshop at Christ’s Hospital. Our pupils enjoyed sharing the experience with pupils who have similar interests from other colleges and the workshop provided an insight into the fascinating world of surgery, helping to inspire the next generation.”
