GCSE results: Delight at Felpham Community College

Hannah, 16, gained the top marks in English language, business, history, statistics, biology, chemistry, physics, applications of maths and methods of maths when they were revealed last Thursday (August 13). She also achieved 2A grades in Spanish and English literature.

She said: “I’m very happy. I didn’t expect my results to be as good as this but I worked really hard for them.”

She is undecided where to take her A-levels to further her ambition for a financial career. “I like maths. The numbers fit in my head and they just work,” she said.

Alex Burford, 16, gained 3A* grades including biology and applications of maths, 5A grades in methods of maths, PE, physics, chemistry, history and ICT and 3B grades.

“I’m really pleased with my results,” he said. “They were better than I expected.” He is staying at the college to study A-levels in maths, physics, PE and biology.

“I would like a career in engineering. It’s something quite familiar to me because my parents did it and it also affects everyday life.”

Mitchell Cane, 16, achieved 5A* grades in statistics, chemistry, geography, applications of maths and methods of maths as well as A grades including English language, English literature, biology and physics.

He said: “I’m very happy. I was not expecting so many A* and A grades. I did a lot more revision than I have ever done before.”

He is staying at Felpham Community College for A-levels in biology, physics and maths and a Btec in sport before an intended career in engineering.
Martin Smit, 16, achieved 5 A* grades in music, applications of maths, methods of maths, chemistry and physics, 5A grades in geography, psychology, Spanish, biology and first language English and 1B grade.

He said: “I’m very chuffed about my results. I expected slightly less than these to be honest. My hard work paid off.”

He will be back at the college soon for A-levels in maths, further maths, physics and Spanish before a possible career involving maths.

Overall, 57 per cent of the group achieved at least five GCSEs which included English and maths.

The college’s headteacher, Mark Anstiss, said: “I am delighted to see our students rewarded with their results today (August 20). Nationally, standards are being pushed up at GCSE level and so it is very pleasing to see out students cope so well with their courses.

“In terms of student progress in English and maths since primary school, these are the best ever results for Felpham.”

Other top achievers at the college were: Liberty Clegg (9A*, 1A and 1B grade), Sian Thackray (9A* and 2A grades), Bethany Hayward (5A*, 5A and 1B grade), Theveenah Balasubramaniam (5A* and 5A grades), Daniel Hind (3A*, 7A and 1B grade), Grace Rollison (3A* and 8A grades), Chloe Phillips (2A* and 9A grades) and Jessica Prior (2A*, 7A and 2C grades).
