Little Laura’s Nursery, in West Wittering, saw its rating rise from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’, much to the delight of manager Laura Attfield.

In her report, inspector Lauren Ferreira, said: “The manager has high expectations of staff and children. She has a strong drive to achieve and actively identifies and addresses areas for improvement.”

Ms Ferreira praised the “fun and exciting” opportunities children were given to develop their maths and lieracy skills, as well as the confidence and good behaviour shown by the youngsters.

Ms Attfield said the report gave a true sense of “what a special nursery Little Laura’s is”. She added: “We have worked hard to build really close bonds between staff and children and we feel this really comes across. Our focus has always been very much child-led, encouraging independence and free thinking – as well as getting very muddy!”

When the nursery was last inspected in February 2015, one of the main issues raised was the need for better support for children for whom English was an additional language.

Ms Attfield said those children were now very settled and, along with their families, formed an integral part of the nursery community.

Her views were echoed by Ms Ferreira, whose report stated: “Staff support children who are learning English as an additional language very well. The manager identified this as an area for improvement and staff attended relevant training. Staff help children to speak English and they are making good progress.”

Little Laura’s will celebrate its sixth birthday in April, and Ms Attfield paid tribute to her team for their hard work over the years. She said: “The team at Little Laura’s are amazing and it would not be as successful without their hard work and passion for the children, which shows in their day to day activities.

“I am very proud to have each and every one of them working at the setting. We are a very reflective nursery and we will continue to strive to be the best we can.”
