"We understand that moving into tier 4 restrictions will be disappointing for local businesses, however we will continue to do everything that we can to support them.

“There are a range of grants available to businesses who will be affected by the new restrictions, including a range of new government grants which are now live on our website."

The council urged businesses to apply for these grants and to find out the other support that is available by visiting www.chichester.gov.uk/covidbusinesssupport."

Derek Marsh, chairman of Chichester's Business Improvement District (BID) said: “Obviously it’s very disappointing for non-essential shops and businesses to be closed again but it is important that people follow Government advice on staying safe and helping to stop the spread of the Covid virus.

"Chichester BID will continue to pass on to BID levy payers advice from the Local Authorities about safety measures; and advice on financial support too if there are any new grants or loans.

"We will work also with the levy payers to make their concerns and needs known to the councils.”
