Latest coronavirus figures for Chichester district before new restrictions are announced

Boris Johnson is expected to announce tougher restrictions to curb the spread of the virus, which has been accelerated by the emergence of a new, more contagious strain.

West Sussex has been under tier 4 restrictions since Boxing Day, but cases have continued to rise.

According to government statistics, the latest coronavirus rate for Chichester for the week ending December 31, is: 424 cases per 100,000 people – 514 new cases, an increase of 223 from the week before.

Tougher restrictions follow the more uplifting news of the rollout of a vaccine developed by scientists at Oxford University, to go with the Pfzier BioNTech vaccine already being administered.
