Sussex MP speaks of ‘immense disappointment’ at fresh lockdown

A Sussex MP has spoken of his ‘immense disappointment’ at a fresh lockdown to curb the spread of the new coronavirus strain.

Andrew Griffith, MP for Arundel and South Downs issued a statement after Boris Johnson ordered people to stay at home for a third time.

He represents Arundel and the South Downs area including Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning, Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint.

Mr Griffith said: “I share the immense disappointment that the new strain of the virus has led to another lock down.

“In particular I feel for those students who have now had substantial portions of their education impacted and the many businesses who would much rather open their doors than survive on government support however welcome that is in these difficult times.”

In the statement he paid tribute to key workers and called for the vaccination programme to exceed its ‘ambitious targets’.

He said: “Once again we thank our key workers – those working in supermarkets, petrol stations, delivery drivers, postmen and women, the emergency services and those on the frontline in care homes and hospitals.

“No stone must now go unturned until the vaccination programme has exceeded even the ambitious targets set for it.”
