Hospitals go for ‘green’ in the recycling stakes

WORTHING, Southlands, and St Richard’s hospitals are going green this year with the installation of dozens of new recycling units.

The 46 new units are part of Western Sussex Hospital Trust’s push to make the sites more environmentally friendly.

The units, which will prevent tonnes of rubbish being unnecessarily thrown into landfill sites each year, cost £9,000 and were funded by Britvic Soft Drinks.

Every day, the trust fills about 2,500 clinical waste bags, and more than 1,500 black waste bags, amounting to 1,000 tonnes of clinical waste and more than 500 tonnes of general waste each year.

The new units are hoped to contribute towards the trust’s goal of cutting total generated waste by 20 per cent.
