On Monday, February 16, 1987, captain Len Butt was presented with the accolade in the assembly room at the council house for his work and inspiration as C.O of the Army Cadet Corps from the early 1960s until his retirement in 1984.

Captain Butt moulded the unit into one of the finest in the country, with many cadets moving on to full-time careers in the army.

The 90-year-old Westbourne resident said: “I hope my medallion will offer public interest towards the award scheme that rewards many unsung people in the city who give their time and consideration to others.

“I don’t have any family to pass it onto, so I wanted it to be added to the splended collection that is on display in the council chambers which depicts many past notable events of local history.”

The city council accepted captain Butt’s offer and his medallion is now available for the public to view.

Chichester’s mayor, Cllr Peter Budge, said: “We are honoured to receive such a treasured award and will make sure that it takes pride of place on display here at the city council offices.”
