A Touch of Glamour comes to Little Common

A NEW business venture opened in Little Common last week that's sure to be a hit with the ladies. 'A Touch of Glamour', which sells high quality wigs and hairpieces, is the idea of proprietor Kathy Harmer, who for the past seven years has worked locally in Sidley as a nail technician.

Kathy said it was from listening to her clients that she discovered the need for wigs and hair pieces along with "a friendly and confidential service."

Many of Kathy's clients have suffered hair loss through various medical ailments and Cancer treatments, which she said in addition to the trauma of dealing with the disease itself, can lead to low self-esteem and lack of confidence.

She said: "For a woman to loose her hair can be very debilitating, nice hair is so important to women; it's a very feminine thing."

One lady, who is herself undergoing treatment for Cancer and agrees wholeheartedly with Kathy's sentiments, is Lynda Osman. She recently purchased one of Kathy's wigs and is delighted with the results.

Lynda, 61, said that having to cope with being told that she had Cancer, rapidly followed by a mastectomy last year, was devastating and loosing her hair from the chemotherapy made her loose all her self-confidence..

She said: "The options that the hospital gave me when they said I would loose my hair from the treatment was limited and the choices of wigs which were available were not very nice. The wig I've bought from Kathy is stylish, looks really nice and the colour is very natural. It's helped boost my confidence."

Project Manager of St Leonards based adult support group 'Cancer Buddies', Annette Hardy said the new shop will play a vital role for ladies suffering the effects of Cancer.

She said: " Several members of the group have bought wigs from Kathy and the feedback from them has been good. They speak highly of the service she provides and they all say she is very supportive which is so important for someone who is dealing with Cancer. People want to look good and to be able to buy a nice wig and feel happy with their appearance."

Kathy said she wants people to feel comfortable going to her salon and there are two changing rooms at the back of the shop where people can try the wigs and hair pieces on in complete privacy.

The wigs and hair pieces look and feel like real hair but are all made from the 'finest scientifically approved synthetics' and are a fraction of the cost of a real hair wig with an average price of 80.

There is also the added bonus of knowing that they won't spoil in the rain!

Kathy said there is a growing trend for wigs as many people now buy them as a fashion item adding: "I cater for everyone, stocking a wide selection of high fashion wigs and the ever popular clip on hair pieces, which give an instant look of longer fuller hair, which is remarkably like real hair. Whether it's for a wedding, a night out with the girls or everyday wear we stock it."

She said she chose to open her shop in Little Common because she feels it is an, "up and coming area with many new businesses moving into the village."
