A27 consultations now set for late June

'Up to four' roundabouts on Chichester's stretch of A27 will now be upgraded, Highways has said

And the public consultations - which have been repeatedly delayed - are now due to take place at the end of June, Highways England has announced.

In an update, released on Thursday, April 14, Highways said: “We will improve up to four junctions on the A27 between Fishbourne Road and Portfield Way.

“At present the options are still being refined to determine their performance in catering for forecast traffic flows and their environmental impact.

“We are making sure they are affordable.

“The main congestion hotspots are the Fishbourne Road and Bognor Road roundabouts.

“The solution for these junctions are likely to be the most significant but as yet we have no preferred option and a decision will not be made until after a full public consultation has taken place.”

Highways said some of the options being considered are grade separation (flyovers, most likely elevating the A27 over existing roundabouts); new traffic lights; and ‘Hamburger’ roundabouts.

MP Andrew Tyrie is concerned the project could be downgraded, after saying the estimated spend of between £122m and £181m was ‘significantly less’ than the figure given to Chichester district councillors.

Last month controversial options for a new northern A27 route between the north of Chichester and Lavant was dropped, along with a partial new southern route.
