Aerial refused on grounds of safety

Safety fears for motorists led councillors to object to a proposed mobile phone mast in North Bersted.

Arun District Council's development control committee decided to oppose the T-Mobile structure after highways chiefs said it would interfere with the views of drivers.

T-Mobile wanted to place the 11.7m-high mast along Rowan Way west of its junction with Woodlands Road. But the roads experts stated that the location was too close to the turning.

Committee members agreed at last week'smeeting that the mast would obstruct visibility for motorists. The proposed site was on a highway verge in front of a grassed area where children play games.

Cllr Sylvia Olliver (Bersted) said: 'I am so pleased about this recommendation to object to the mast. At last, some common sense has come in regarding the road.

'I can't understand why the site was thought to be OK because the grassed area is a children's playground.

'For a mast to be put there would be completely inappopriate.

'I just hope T-Mobile don't come back and try to move the mast further along because it's still a children's play area.'
