Aldwick wins silver in bloom awards

The 'impressive bedding displays in Marine Park Gardens, and excellent displays of floral colour throughout the many residential gardens seen on the tour' have helped Aldwick win a silver award in this year's Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom Awards.

The village which won a bronze last year was presented with its award at a prestigious awards ceremony in Coventry Cathedral yesterday.

In Bloom judge Roger Burnett said: 'There is an obvious commitment by the various community groups to promote conservation of the natural environment within Aldwick.'

And RHS director-general Inga Grimsey added: 'We are delighted to see the wonderful results this year and extend congratulations to all the award winners.

'Communities such as these really show how gardening can improve the environment for all and enrich people's lives.'

The RHS Britain in Bloom Awards, supported by Shredded Wheat, recognise the efforts made by local council, businesses, community groups, children and volunteers in helping to create lasting improvements to the local environment.

The 68 finalists were judged throughout the summer by touring RHS judges who travelled the length and breadth of the UK, looking for the quality of their floral displays, permanent landscaping, sustainable development, local environmental quality and public awareness.

The largest horticultural campaign in Europe, the competition encourages people to actively improve their local environments through cleanliness, sustainability and creative planting.

Aldwick was one of three silver award winners in the urban community category of the competition.

Bognor Regis, which last year won a silver award in the coastal category, this year was also up with the winners, winning a bronze for its many floral features in the competition.

In total, 14 gold, 26 silver gilt, 24 silver and four bronze achievement awards were made this year.
