A spokesman for Hampshire police told the Observer: “We were called at 5.22pm yesterday evening by a member of the public who had seen two Lurcher-type dogs attacking alpaca in a field off Mill Lane, Passfield.

“The dogs ran off when the man intervened.”

Police officers and a vet attended the scene of the attack.

But said the spokesman: “Unfortunately two of the alpaca had to be put down due to the extent of their injuries. A third alpaca was also injured in the incident.
