The Afternoon Book Group are next getting together this afternoon, January 31 at 2pm. They will be reading Anthony Trollope’s “Miss Mackenzie” about a genteel, poor spinster who comes into a fortune. Their February meeting is Friday, February 28. They will be looking at the book “The White Tiger” by Aravind Adiga. Ashburnham Local History Group are next meeting on February 3, 7.30pm in Ashburnham Church Hall. Subjects this month include “The Birth of the Ashburnham Christian Trust” and “Some Notable Rogues of Eastern Sussex - Part II”. All are welcome.

The next Pub Quiz at the Ash Tree Inn is on Tuesday, February 4, 7.45pm. £1 entry with a £5 set meal available. For further information please call 01424 892104.

Ashburnham Village Hall fund raisers are holding some Clay Pigeon Shoots to raise fnds for the hall. The first is on February 8 at Lakehurst Meadow, Lakehurst Lane, the second is on March 15 at Deer Park Farm. Both commence at 10am. You are invited to either shoot or watch. Tuition and equipment will be available. The event is suitable for beginners and the experienced. A single Have-a-go round is £5, 1 round of 50 clays over 5 stands is £18* (* price does not include cartridges which will be available). Refreshments will also be available. 2m@1 are meeting on February 10, 1pm at Ashburnham Church Hall, where John Southam will give a talk entitled “60 Degrees North”.

The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in Ashburnham (by the chapel) on Thursday, February 13 & 27, 9.50am - 10.10am.

Ashburnham & Penhurst Friendly Neighbours scheme goes live on Friday, February 14. If you would like a lift to the shops, doctor of hospital, a prescription collected or a parcel posted, or shopping collected or some help around the home, please call 01424 863104. To celebrate the launch of this scheme, a coffee morning is being held on February 15, 10am - 12pm at the Pavilion.

Ashburnham & Penhurst WI are meeting on Monday February 17, 7.30pm at the Village Hall. They welcome Roy Calthorpe with stories and anecdotes about some of the buildings and people in the town of Battle in bygone days. The evening will include refreshments and a raffle. WI members free, visitors £2. No need to book – just go along!

The next Village Lunch is on February 19, at Ashburnham Village Hall. Lunch is cooked every month for any older residents in the villages who would like a bit of company and a delicious meal.
