A LEADING West Sussex county councillor has given an assurance that the meals on wheels service will continue.
Speaking at a meeting of the county local committee in Lodsworth, chairman Michael Brown told representatives of parishes across the Midhurst and Petworth area: “A new procurement process is being initiated.”
Concern over the future of the service was raised by Kirdford Parish Council representative Susan Pinder in the wake of the failure of the Royal Voluntary Service to make its new meals service contract with the county council pay for itself.
Mrs Pinder said changes to the way it was operated had upset volunteers who did not want the added ‘befriending’ role to the service they provided.
She asked how much influence the county council could exert on the way it was run.
Mr Brown told her that WSCC specified what sort of operation it wanted. He was disappointed the RVS had failed. “They have a very good record and it was a shame that they found the commercial process too much for them, but the service will go on.”
