Author HG Wells will be making a special appearance in Midhurst next month to take part in this year’s MADhurst festival.

MADhurst 2016 will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the ‘Time Machine’ author and his links with Midhurst and the surrounding area.

He spent part of his childhood at Uppark where his mother Sarah, was housekeeper between 1880 and 1893.

He was also a pupil and then for a short time a teacher at Midhurst Grammar School.

And during the festival this year he will be returning to Midhurst and conducting history walks showing the town as it has not been seen for a century.

The walks are just one of the new additions to the action packed programme which orgnanisers promise is ‘bursting at the seams’ with entertainment this year.

From August 20-29, visitors to the town will be treated to an array of entertaining performances, including comedy, cabaret, children’s activities and Shakespeare.

During the day time there will be a variety of lunchtime concerts at the Olive and Vine and in the evening audiences will be treated to a cabaret, rock choir, ceilidh, art trail and the ever popular Milestone Collective Swing Band, among other exciting events.

The tenh day festival will culminate in the grand finale at the Midhurst Sports Association field beside the Cowdray Ruins complete with food, stalls, flying display and seven hours of music and entertainment with headline act Willie Austin.

The MADhurdst short story competition takes place again this year and in keeping with the HG Wells anniversary the theme is Time Travel.

It takes place in three categories, ten and under, 11-16 and over 17.

Entries must be placed in a sealed envelope in the dedicated box at the Midhurst Library by Monday August 8 at 5pm.

A number of creative workshops through the festival will also be on offer for both adults and children teaching everything from cake decorating to drawing.
