Abigail Martin, Bronte Paterson, Rachel Boswell and Tabitha Newman (pictured) enjoyed the day of creative writing with Roy, who is the author of more than 45 children's books including the hugely popular How to Handle series.

Acting headteacher Graham Sullivan said: 'The girls got a lot out of the day and spoke enthusiastically about what they had learnt.

'It is important for talented young writers to meet and work with authors.

'The work Roy did with the children will have real impact on the standard of writing at Blackboys.'
