Banners on Worthing buses driving home the message

BANNERS on buses are being used to drive home the message that people must register to vote.

In a bid to increase electoral participation, Worthing, Adur, Chichester and Arun councils are running a campaign to remind residents not to miss their chance to vote.

Various Stagecoach buses will be carrying the message 'Are you registered to vote?' and telling those who are not to contact their council office or visit their website.

The campaign was launched at Worthing bus depo, in Marine Parade, on Friday, September 21, when leaders and returning officers from all four councils unveiled the advertisements.

Worthing's deputy leader, Ann Barlow, said: "Please fill out your electoral registration forms and return them ASAP. We would like to assure you all that casting your vote at all elections whether local or parliamentary really can make a difference in your community."

In Worthing, buses carrying the adverts will include the no.1 '“ which travels between Worthing, Findon and Storrington; the no.5 '“ which covers Worthing, Durrington and Broadwater; the no.7 '“ which travels through Lancing, Sompting and Worthing; the no.9 '“ which covers Littlehampton to Southwick; the no.10 '“ which goes through Worthing, Tarring and Goring; and some on the no.700 route.

By now all residents should have received an electoral registration form through their door to complete for next year's register.

New legislation means if forms are not returned on time the electoral registration officer's staff will have to pay non-responding households a personal visit to collect them.
