A bid by Midhurst traders to turn lorry loading bays in North Street into dual use parking for shoppers has been given the cold shoulder.
Midhurst First traders came up with the scheme to tackle what they said was a ‘desperate’ shortage of car parking space in the town which they claimed was driving shoppers away.
They are currently canvassing shopkeepers in North Street on the idea of turning the loading bays into dual use – with shoppers permitted to use them after 10am.
They asked town councillors to back their bid if it was supposed by the majority of traders.
But town councillors say they cannot back the scheme pointing out loading bays were set up originally to ease congestion and changing their use would only swap one problem for another.
