Bigger role in store for new-look fire station

A new-look Fire Station at Arundel, which was officially re-opened this week has been designed to play a more active role in the community and emphasise the importance of fire safety.

A massive fire which broke out almost a year ago caused hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage when it destroyed both the building and the town's fire tender.

But unlike the last building which did not have a smoke alarm, in common with all West Sussex Fire Stations now, the new station has not only a smoke alarm, but has also been fitted with a sprinkler system.

Neil Odin, area commander said: "The old fire station complied with building regulations relating to fire safety at the time, and did not have a smoke alarm because it was usually unoccupied and there was little or no risk to life.

To coincide with the opening West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting three part-time firefighters for the fire station.

"It is important we recruit three new male or female firefighters because the simple fact is without them, we cannot guarantee 24/7 coverage at the Fire Station," said Neil

Like their full-time colleagues, retained firefighters do not just respond to blazes and other emergencies.

"They also play a crucial role in the community by carrying out fire prevention duties like free home fire safety checks '“ which is making a real difference," said Neil.

Another of the fire station's new features is a lecture and meeting room that can be used by residents, making it a valuable resource. There is also improved access and facilities for people with disabilities.
