Bike shop owner cycles to fundraise for cancer

Steve Mitchell, owner of Summit Bikes in Selsey, took part in the London to Paris bike ride along with four friends to support Leukaemia and Lymphoma research.

The team met at Steve’s shop and cycled up to Checkatrade where they began their journey to London.

Steve said: “In 2009, I was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma/acute leukaemia after I found a lump. The only thing that prompted me to look for the lump was the factmy brother had just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, so he was in effect one of the people that saved my life.

“The others were the fantastic hospital staff at St Richard’s and Southampton General, and one selfless person, without whom I most certainly wouldn’t be here now, my bone marrow donor.

“When I first left hospital, I had lost three stone, but within nine months I was cycling from Selsey to Southampton and back for my check-ups.

“Fast forward six years, and here I am lining up with some of my best friends, Matthew Wiggs, Mark Brown, Henry Wilkinson and Shaun Ellphick, to embark on a 400-mile cycle ride from Selsey to London to Paris, where I would meet Catherine Frost, my bone marrow donor.

“When I met her, I 
stumbled over with tears running down my face, and we just hugged.”
