The summer outing, which was organised as the group does not have a meeting in August, saw 15 members tuck into a cream tea, served on board.

President Vanessa Blaber said: “We were lucky with the weather. The day had dawned damp and rainy, the first wet morning for weeks, however the rain had cleared by mid-morning and it was quite dry again, though cloudy, by the time we set sail at 2pm.

“The overall impression of the boat trip was the incredible smoothness and silence of the boat – or it would have been silent without all the chatter!

“The horse towing the boat strolled along the tow-path and we were assured that it was not being overworked even though there were more than 40 people on the boat.

“We had wonderful views of the varied wildflowers and bulrushes on the banks, and the amazing countryside north of Godalming towards Guildford. It was hard to believe that we were so close to an urban area.”

The next meeting of Stedham WI will be on September 17 in Stedham Memorial Hall, when members will make the final arrangements for the centenary fête two days later.
