John Haynes, Poppy Appeal organiser, said he was 'very pleased' after a 'fantastic’ £1,345 was raised on Saturday from Tesco collections alone.

He added: “We had sea cadets, a member of the Royal British Legion Bikers Branch and a solider, who is the son of one of the volunteers.

“We had great support from the Tesco customer service manager and team leaders. It was a great start and I am very pleased with the public response.”

John also thanked the support of Morrisons and their 'very helpful' team of volunteers

"They make us tea and coffee and just make our job so much easier," he said.

"A lot of our volunteers are elderly and disabled and we even had a volunteer at Morrisons with no legs helping out."

Collections are being made outside Tesco every day until November 10.

John’s target is to raise £15,000 before that deadline, which would top last year's total of £11,700.
