Bookshop couple reach final chapter

IT was the end of an era at Rye’s Martello Books when Wendy and Terry retired recently after 17 years of running the business.

The independent bookshop often hosted signings by local authors, including Spike Milligan, when he was alive, and the late John Ryan, who created Captain Pugwash.

It also formed a successful book club.

The couple said farewell to valued customers on Saturday June 29, which was the last day of trading.

Wendy Harvey said: “The building is being sold and it is hoped that the new owner will open it as a bookshop.”
