Boosing culture among Bognor's young people

Arts and culture for young children and families in West Sussex are in line for development, after the county council was chosen as a key partner to work with Earlyarts.

The council's arts service is one of 23 partners selected by Earlyarts, which was established in 2002 to drive up standards in creative practice with families and young children.

It is the only partner in the south east, outside London.

"The partners will work with Earlyarts to roll out a professional development programme across the country, enabling smaller organisations to join a nationwide network and helping them work together," said a council spokesman.

"Under the initiative, the county council will run development and training days and will develop a network of early years arts organisations in West Sussex and the surrounding area."

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, county cabinet member for environment and economy, added: "The county arts service has a good track record with early years art including a series of events where artists taught in early years sessions across the county.

"With this announcement, we can work with a number of West Sussex artists who are keen to work in early years settings and help them join forces."

Key partners working with the arts service on the scheme will be the county council's early years service, children and family centres and nurseries, Northbrook College in Worthing and Chichester Festival Theatre.
