Boys find body in river under bridge

THE body of a man was found in the water under Newhaven swing bridge on Friday.

Two boys spotted the man at around 5.45pm. Police were called and the Newhaven Lifeboat crew were scrambled to retrieve the body which was trapped in the uprights of the bridge.

Detective Sgt John Cousins, from Eastbourne CID, said: 'Police were called to West Quay where the partially clothed body of a man was recovered from the River Ouse, just south of the swing bridge by Railway Approach.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious or looking for anyone else in connection with the man s death.

DS Cousins added: 'At this moment we are not treating it as a murder inquiry, but as an unexplained death.

The body was taken to Brighton morgue. The man was described as aged late 40 s to early 50 s, with grey hair and wearing a brown jacket.
