The 32-year-old woman from Waterlooville was involved in a collision on the A27 Fishbourne roundabout at Chichester and suffered serious head injuries.

This afternoon, Sergeant Tony Crisp, of the Arundel Road Policing Unit, said: “I understand the woman who was seriously injured is now making a recovery. The incident caused huge tailbacks in the area, with eastbound traffic queued for several miles back to the Sussex-Hampshire border.

“Unfortunately, with a huge lorry and its load to recover, the scene to be examined and cleared, and the need to bring in the air ambulance helicopter, we were unable to reopen the carriageway for a good five hours.

She said they left Bosham at 1pm and were two cars behind the Nissan.

“We watched in disbelief after hearing the most horrendous bang when the lorry appeared from nowhere, she said.

She said the lorry hit the car sideways on, shunting it up and over the roundabout before it jackknifed.

“It felt as though it was never going to stop. It was a miracle that the back of the lorry didn’t hit more cars as it jackknifed and swung around towards the junction we had left,” she said.

“I think that was because everyone just stopped driving with shock on the roundabout when we heard the sickening noise of the impact. A lot of people just stopped and jumped out of their cars and ran to the car to see what they could do.”

She said the family’s ‘hopes and prayers’ were with the victim and her family.

The woman was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. She has been detained with serious injuries.
