FORMER Tory councillor John Cherry will have to undergo diversity and equality training after he was rapped by the district council for ‘racist’ comments he made in April.

He went before a Chichester District Council committee today (December 5), which said he breached its code of conduct.

The meeting of the standards committee followed remarks Mr Cherry made to a national newspaper earlier this year.

Members say he conducted himself in a manner which could be reasonably regarded as bringing his office into disrepute, and failed to treat others with respect.

The following sanctions have been imposed: a formal letter of censure will be issued to Mr Cherry, finding him to have breached the code of conduct and the committee’s findings will be reported to the next full council meeting.

It also recommended Mr Cherry be removed from any or all committees or sub-committees of the council - though Mr Cherry has already resigned.

Mr Cherry must also undergo diversity and equality training when the next available opportunity arises.

Mr Cherry, who was earlier this year standing as the Tory candidate for Midhurst in West Sussex County Council elections, was forced to resign from the Conservative party in the racism storm that followed his comments made to the Mail on Sunday.

He questioned whether the site of the former St Cuthman’s School was right for the proposed academy for the children from Stockwell, London.
