IT will be the end of an era when the men’s clothing shop Fraser’s closes in Midhurst’s North Street next month.

It is one of the oldest established shops in Midhurst selling men’s clothes since the mid 1800s.

Midhurst has been a very productive town and it has been good to us

Stuart Fraser, who has owned the shop since 1978 told the Observer: “The lease has come to an end.

“I will be 66 years old later this year and I do not want to be taking on a new lease.”

He said the Petersfield branch of Fraser’s would continue to operate.

“I will be working from Petersfield and taking most of the staff with me,” he said.

He said he believed the shop had continuously traded as a clothing business for more than 160 years.

“I have been pictures going back to the 1860s and it looks well established then.

“My father already had a shop in Reigate and took this over in 1975. I took it over three years later.

“It was the one thing I did not want to do.

“I was in textile technology and then production engineering.

“But it has been a very good shop. Midhurst has been a very productive town and it has been good to us.

“It has been a very happy and good place to work.

“It has been hard but it has worked.”
