Sunday trading on the cards at Petworth

Business leaders in Petworth are meeting to decide whether town shops should open on Sundays.

The committee of Petworth Business Association wants to push the project forward for a trial period this year, to coincide with the 2012 season at Petworth House, if at least 50 per cent of the membership give their backing.

The group has a flourishing membership of around 110 businesses, including non-retailers, service members and the town’s antique and fine art dealers.

Only two or three businesses are not signed up with the association.

Chairman Jackie Tudor said the issue of Sunday opening had been raised at a recent meeting and there had been ‘a good show’ of hands in favour.

“There are some very positive things about opening on a Sunday at a time when we are having a regeneration with new people coming in,” Mrs Tudor said.
