CAB calls on ministers to ensure people fit to work

A NATIONAL campaign by Citizens Advice Bureaux has been launched to help sick and disabled people get support.

“The recent changes to ESA (Employment Support Allowance) will make it harder for sick
and disabled people to get fair treatment and we must ensure they
are not left stranded
due to reforms to government support,” said Carol Groves,
the chief executive
officer of Arun and Chichester CAB.

The campaign calls on ministers to ensure independent medical evidence is considered
by officials before
making an assessment about a person’s fitness
for work, ensuring applicants for ESA are not left without support during the extra reassessment and for medical assessors who make an incorrect assessment to be fined.

A spokesman said: “In the past six months, advisers and volunteers in the Arun and Chichester CAB have helped 320 ESA clients with the
widely-criticised ESA.”

Chichester and Arun CAB has also helped deal with 90 mandatory reconsideration issues.”
