The Spring Show: The Catsfield Horticultural Society will be holding the Spring Show on Saturday 9th April in the Village Hall from 2pm – 4pm. Entrance will be 50p and children free. There will be a Raffle, Teas, Plant and Cake Stalls and of course the added interest of looking at all the lovely entries. Don’t forget to get your schedules from the Village Stores and plan your entries, do please encourage the children to enter too.

Sport: Our football team travelled to Northiam last Saturday taking the bare minimum of 11 players and without our usual goalkeeper. The elderly President “ran” the line for the first half when the Chairman took pity on him and did the second half. The result? We lost 0 - 4, not helped by one of our players being sent off towards the end. Apparently, we didn’t play badly, but failed to score. An injury meant we had to change goalkeepers during the match, so as you can see, we were up against it. We play Hastings Rangers at home tomorrow and unless our form changes spectacularly, we seem destined to be relegated. Of course, the President still has his football boots in the shed at home, but not the energy.

More News: The planter provided by the WI opposite the Village Hall is about to come into full flower and we hope you enjoy the spring bulbs.

Did you know there is a new bookshop in Old Ladies Court in Battle? Battle used to have two bookshops, which were a delight to visit and browse, so let us hope this new venture succeeds.

The Spring Concert: What a delightful evening last Friday’s concert in the church proved to be! Bob Andrew’s list of performers was remarkable and he gave us an evening of great diversity of excellent musical talent and that included his own, when he opened the concert stunning everyone playing the difficult Scherzo in D Flat by Chopin. The St Lawrence Choir were on form as ever, as was the lovely performance in both halves by the charming Lucy Ashton. Maya and Ella Andrew entertained us confidently on the piano and singing respectively. Sam Wastell, only recently out of school, proved to be an excellent violinist playing Vivaldi’s ‘Spring from Four Seasons’ and the lilting ‘Ladies in Lavender’ by Hess. Cameron Milne showed his skill on the piano playing Brahms Intermezzo in E Flat. Liz Mason, expertly accompanied by Holly on the piano, expertly played ‘Sweet Antique’ by Rutter on the flute and she was followed by Paul Eshelby playing the trumpet and flugelhorn. ‘The St Laurence Quartet’ (better known as Mike, Rosemary, Linda and James) amused us with some amusing renditions of old English Folk music. The ladies of the church provided an amazing spread of food in the interval and the evening, after expenses, raised the great sum of £538 for church funds. The evening ended by choir, organ, trumpet and audience truly raising the rafters and singing together the rousing ‘One Hundreth’ – ‘All People that on Earth do Dwell’.

Two Dates for your Diary: A special treat on Thursday 28th April when Catsfield Village Hall is proud to present ‘Bowjangles’ with a show entitled ‘On the Box!’ This promises to be a fast moving, energetic comedy performance by a string quartet who dance, sing, leap, tumble and joke whilst playing all the music and not missing a beat! Tickets will be on sale shortly from the Village Stores price £10 and £7 for concessions.

For the gardeners in our midst, the very popular annual Coffee Morning and Plant Sale for Christian Aid will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 14th May. It’s well worth waiting for this event before buying expensive plants elsewhere, because on this occasion the hall is always packed with plants of all kinds for sale at the most reasonable prices and once the doors are opened, the plants go flying out of it, snatched up by keen gardeners who know a bargain!

Mobile Library: Today, Friday 18th March, the East Sussex Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the Village Hall from 11.55am – 12.30 pm.
