Champions of new sports in Petworth are being sought in a bid to turn round the fortunes of the Petworth Park Sports Ground.
Chairman of the town council Chris Kemp, told members of the public at the annual meeting on Friday evening (May 26), councillors were about to complete a new lease for the ground with the National Trust (NT).
“We gave a commitment to the NT we would promote sport on the ground, it’s one of the main things they asked us to do and we need help to do it.
“Now we need people to champion a variety of new sports up there. It’s a great facility, but it is not greatly used at the moment.”
He said the football club would welcome new members and the recently formed cricket club was already attracting many young people.
He suggested the formation of a girls’ football team, archery or a trim trail.
“I need people to come forward and help us with new sports, so we can provide new opportunities for the community.”
Mr Kemp said the town council was talking to county highways officers about the possibility of providing a pedestrian crossing to the park across the A272.
