Chichester gallery awarded £191,336 to build fine art store

The Chichester gallery will use the money to convert a building on the site into a fine art store.

The project will ensure that the gallery’s collections are stored in a safe, effective and appropriate storage.

The increased capacity to store work will also provide Pallant House Gallery with the opportunity to develop its collection through future acquisitions.

Marc Steene, executive director, Pallant House Gallery, said: “The gallery is thrilled to have received funding from the Arts Council through its Small Scale Capital Grant towards the development of an Art Store at Pallant House Gallery.

“This important project will enable the gallery to modernise its facilities and provide wider access to its important collection of Modern British art.”

The gallery is among 39 successful applicants across England, with the total amount awarded in excess of £10million.

The programme aims to support organisations throughout England to develop resilience by giving them the right buildings and equipment to deliver their work, and to become more sustainable businesses.

Hedley Swain, area director, South East, Arts Council England, said: “It is really important that organisations are equipped to curate and store their wonderful collections safely.

“We are really pleased to be able to support Pallant House Gallery’s plans, which will not only help protect its existing collection, but also provide the opportunity to expand it – increasing the breadth of work that its audiences can see.

“Our small capital grants, which range from £100,000 up to £500,000, allow organisations to consolidate and improve existing arts and cultural buildings and equipment - a further application round of small grants is anticipated to open in 2016/17.”
