Chichester woman diagnosed with cancer '˜braves the shave' for charity

When Brenda Stubbington, 61, of Charles Avenue, was told that she would lose her hair after her first course of chemotherapy, she decided to turn the hair loss into an opportunity to fundraise.

Rather than waiting for her hair to fall out, Brenda, her two grandsons and her niece, all stood up to cancer and took part in a headshave for Macmillan.

Brenda said: “I saw an advert about ‘brave the shave’ for Macmillan and I decided to pre-empt the hair loss rather than wait for it to happen.”

Brenda and her family completed the challenge on Saturday, July 30, at her home in Chichester.

“I was tickled pink with the amount of people who took part,” she added.

“All my neighbours came out to watch, some I didn’t even know but they had heard about it and wanted to support us.”

So far Brenda and her family have raised an outstanding £1,300 – but the generous donations are still flowing in.

Brenda said: “I keep baking cakes for cake sales to add to the funds, and people have been knocking on my door with donations which is incredible.”

Grandsons, Charlie, 7, and Danny, 4, were also determined to make their headshaves count.

“Charlie and Danny’s aim was to raise £50 by themselves, but I think their fundraising alone is up to £300 now,” continued Brenda.

“Even my granddaughter took part – Laci had her hair cut short and donated it to the Little Princess Trust.

“I just really want to say thank you for all the support from everybody.”
