Chichester's Tim Peake voted second most inspirational Briton

Astronaut Tim Peake has been voted one of the most inspirational living Britons.

The Festival of Learning charity has revealed that the 44-year-old from Westbourne – who is currently on the International Space Station for a six-month mission – was placed second in a poll of 2,000 adults.

The top spot was secured by Harry Potter author J.K Rowling, with Victoria Pendleton third.

Stephen Evans, deputy chief executive from Learning and Work Institute, said: “Learning has never been more important for life, work and health.

“It can help to build a new career, break with routine and meet new people, and inspire new interests.

“It’s great that so many people polled are inspired to learn to try new things or work toward their dream job.”

Ex-Olympian, Eddie the Eagle was fourth, and in joint fifth place were businesswoman Karen Brady and chef Jamie Oliver.

The poll - carried out by Censuswide in April 2016 - aims to encourage people of all ages to take up learning, and found a third of Brits have been spurred on to try their hand at something new after watching high-profile names succeed in a new career.

Three quarters of those surveyed admitted to never giving up on their dream jobs.

The British ESA astronaut & test pilot is currently living and working on board the International Space Station for six months, and yesterday tweeted a picture of Europe from space with the caption: “Been some great night passes over Europe recently... I am waving!”
