Chinese celebration at Bexhill High

Chinese New Year celebrations were held at Bexhill High school for pupils and youngsters from local primary schools.

The event was social as well as educational as those attending had the chance to experience Chinese culture from paper folding to martial arts.

Organiser Marie Cooper said: "The evening was attended by all ages from students, parents, Bexhill residents and staff.

"It was a good opportunity for local people to get together and enjoy themselves whilst learning something new at the same time...we were able to do some calligraphy, Chinese paper folding and even pick up glass marbles with chop sticks, not easy!

"The evening ended with a general knowledge quiz on China. The winners were the Vogel family who shared the cash prize amongst their children.

"Here at Bexhill High we are determined to work closely with other schools in the area and the community at large to promote cultural understanding and better tolerance of each other.

"With events like these we are hoping to catch some of our youngsters' interest. It was encouraging to find that already some contacts outside the school were happy to support the evening."

"We would like to thank 'Maggie's Kitchen', Chinese take-away restaurant in Bexhill, for cooking the food and 'East Sussex Martial arts school' for doing the kick-boxing and Karate demonstration.

"We are hoping to host further evenings of this kind, so watch this space! If you have any suggestions, comments or would like to be contacted about future events, please contact Marie Cooper, Assistant principal, at Bexhill High via the school switch board or on [email protected].

Julie Light and her family commented: "Please thank everyone involved in the Chinese evening, it was very enjoyable and not only did we enjoy the food, but had great fun, and learnt a few things as well...it was brilliant."
