'˜Clean for the Queen' across Midhurst and Petworth area

AS the country prepares to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Queen later this year communities in the Midhurst and Petworth area are clearing up their streets and putting plans in place for celebrations.

As part of the ‘Clean for the Queen’ initiative villagers in Easebourne are holding a litter clearance day organised by the parish council.

Volunteers are meeting in Wheelbarrow Castle at 9.30am on Saturday, March 5.

In Midhurst there are to be three separate clean up initiatives.

On Friday, March 4, the South Downs National Park Authority has organised a lunch time litter pick.

And on Sunday, March 6, Costa Coffee at Midhurst is organising its own ‘Clean for the Queen’ event.

Manager Michael Simpson said: “It would be great to have as many of our customers as possible to come and help us make sure our town is clean and tidy.

“If you would like to come and help us, please pop in and see our team to pledge your support.”

Anyone who would like to help should meet at Costa at 1pm on March 6.

A suggestion that Midhurst Town Council should move its planned annual litter pick from March 18 to March 5 to make it a three pronged Clean for the Queen over three days, fell on stoney ground.

Chairman of the community care committee Glyn Upjohn said he believed the initiative was aimed at encouraging communities where litter picks were not already organised.

Although some councillors felt they might attract more volunteers if they hitched their wagon to the nationwide event, it was decided to stick to the planned date of March 18.

Funding of £250 is available to communities to help organise birthday celebrations.

Midhurst Town Council says it will apply for the funding to help any group in the town which wants to take on a community royal celebration.
