People feared the historic cobbles had been lost as contractors dug up parts of North Street to find the cause of power cuts to homes and businesses. They had been working along the length of North Street since January 11, but now the holes have been filled in and covered.

Bernard Bayly, well known Midhurst accountant said: “I was astounded to see the Tarmac. This needs watching as the cobbles are a historic part of the old Market town.”

A spokesman for SSE said: “We would like to assure everyone we are well aware of the historic significance of the cobbles and we will be reinstating them when work is complete. The present surface is only temporary.”

He said while working three faults were discovered caused by cables being encased in concrete by a third party many years ago.

Two faults have been rectified but a permanent solution is being planned to fix the third.
