Conservation undermined by town's own planners

CONSERVATION policies in Worthing are being put at risk. This is the view of the Worthing Society, which says it is very concerned that policies put in place to protect and conserve some of the town's most important and historic buildings are being undermined by recent decisions by town planners.

Two weeks ago, the West Sussex Gazette reported on the proposed demolition of Spells Yard after the borough council's Development Control Committee backed plans for a mixed-use development.

Spells Yard is at the junction of Grafton Place and Portland Road in the Chapel Road Conservation Area.

Now the society has raised serious concerns about what is happening in the town.

Chairman David Sumner said: " In recent weeks we have seen the virtual demolition of an architecturally significant building in Ann Street amd permission given for a new development in Grafton Place that would result in the demolition of an historic courtyard complex that dates back to the early 19th century. Both these examples lie within conservation areas."
