Construction of recyling site starts

WORK has started to convert a disused army camp into a waste processing site.

Despite objections from Maresfield Parish Council, Veolia gained planning permission from East Sussex County Council for the 2.5 hectare site on the A272 near Maresfield.

It will be used as a waste transfer station that, on completion, will have the capacity handle 85,000 tonnes of waste a year.

A new household waste recycling site will also be built to replace the existing Sunday morning mobile service in Uckfield.

Residents will be able to recycle or dispose of rubbish seven days a week.

The contract, valued at 3.7million, is expected to last about 56 weeks.

Work will conclude sometime around March 2008.
