Councillors stage sit-in at incinerator meeting

LIBDEM councillors staged a dramatic sit-in after East Sussex County Council excluded them from financial discussions about the Newhaven incinerator.

The councillors held the protest at County Hall in Lewes yesterday (Tuesday) during an East Sussex County Council cabinet meeting.

The Conservative-lead cabinet passed a resolution to exclude all non-cabinet councillors, including Lib Dem county councillors who represent Newhaven.

A total of nine Lib Dem councillors took part in the sit-in, and the meeting was moved to another part of the building and continued behind closed doors.

The Lib Dems said the decision to move the meeting was undemocratic and has damaged the council's reputation.

But the legal director at the county council has said the meeting had to be held in private because in the past financial details had been leaked to the press.
