County coppicing groups have a go

THE Surrey and Sussex Coppicing Group hosted a hands on day in Fernhurst, where the varied craftsmen who attended were able to try their hands at each others skills.

Hurdle makers wove hazel into high ‘fences’, and walking sticks and thumb sticks were carved by The Whittling Woodpecker.

The owner of Fraught Wrought made tools from billhooks, side axes and adzes to esoteric chisels for bowl carvers.

Pole lathes were used to turn lengths of wood into everything from rounder’s bats to chair legs.

The craftsmen and visitors were also able to enjoy the barbeque, buy tools in the auction, and sit in the roundhouse.
