County gets a raw deal from government - MP

MP Charles Hendry has found 'just how much the Government is helping areas in the Midlands and the North, at the expense of councils in the South-East'.

In his most recent questions to Ministers in the House of Commons, Mr Hendry has established that East Sussex County Council receives just 159 per person in the form of a grant from central government.

This compares with an average for England and Wales of around 350 per head and far below 1,000 given to some councils.

Mr Hendry, the Wealden MP said, said: 'If East Sussex was funded at the average level of other county councils, the County Council would receive a staggering 97 million extra, this year from central government.

'At a stroke, this would solve the problems the County Council faces in funding education, transport, police and social services.

'Needless to say, we could do with the money to sort out the problems associated with the additional housing New Labour plans to build in this area."
