Crack-down on pollution in Chichester region

Former police officers are helping to clean up the environment as part of a new scheme to crackdown on pollution in the region.

Water company Southern Water has taken on three former policemen

experienced in areas such as surveillance to help catch people who

discharge waste into the water system.

The new team will be working with various authorities such as councils, the police and the Environment Agency.

Their work will include tracking people who release waste in the sewer network and waste water treatment works and people who make illegal

connections to the company's 21,000km sewer network.

The crackdown comes after a Littlehampton company, Kevin Jenkins and Son Ltd, was found guilty of discharging waste into the sewerage system on two separate occasions.

It was fined 6,000 and ordered to pay costs of 4,500 during a hearing at Chichester Magistrates Court.

Assistant director of operations at Southern Water, Jon Crooke said: "Illegal discharges such as this can cause a public nuisance by creating unpleasant odour, blockages in sewers and even wastewater flooding.

"We are working hard to identify and clamp down on all bad practice which affects our sewer network and hope this court case will serve as a warning."
